Driving ability can be compromised after injury, severe illness, or decline in skills from aging. A comprehensive Driving Assessment and On Road Evaluation can be very valuable in making decisions regarding driving safety.

Our Driving Assessment and Behind-the-Wheel Evaluation are designed for people who need a driving examination when returning to driving after illness or injury, who are concerned about their driving skills in general, whose family would like evaluation for continued driving, or who have been involved in multiple minor accidents or near accidents and feel that they should be tested for continued driving.

The Driving Assessment provides testing and measurement of:

  • Driving safety and independence
  • Strength and functional skills
  • Coordination and reaction time
  • Visual acuity and visual perception, depth perception, peripheral vision, visual spatial skills, contrast sensitivity
  • Cognition including sustained attention, alternating attention and decision-making

After the Driving Assessment, every driver will receive a written report that will be reviewed with them and include:

  • Recommendations made to increase driving skills
  • Recommendations for available training to address their specific concerns or barriers
  • Recommendations regarding a Behind-the-Wheel Evaluation

The Behind-the-Wheel Evaluation includes all of the components of the driving assessment as well as an on-the-road test. The Behind-the-Wheel Evaluation includes.

The On Road Evaluation includes:

  • Driving Assessment (see above)
  • Functional safety when using the car in the community
  • Reaction time for safe use of pedals and steering
  • Distance orientation when doing turns, lane changes and parking
  • Problem solving with proper judgment to negotiate traffic
  • Negotiating in traffic
  • Route planning and memory
  • Judgment, prediction and timing and correct processing when experiencing an unexpected event in traffic

Every driver after the Behind-the-Wheel Evaluation will receive a written report detailing the results of the Driving Assessment ( see above) as well as information about adaptive devices that can help to compensate for physical changes, offer resources for vehicle modifications, recommendations for therapy and on-street training to improve driver performance, and suggestions about whether the driver should continue to drive or stop driving based on the clinician's observations during the Behind-the-Wheel Evaluation.
